Dunmore Abbey is a former Augustinian monastery in Dunmore, County Galway. It was built on the ruins of an ancient abbey, once founded by Saint Patrick. Today, the building is one of the region’s top attractions!
The present monastery was founded in 1425 by Walter de Birmingham, Lord and Baron of Athenry. The building was built to house hermit monks, but went through many turbulent episodes following the Protestant Reformation.
The site is exceptional, and offers a very pretty sight in terms of architecture. Also, don’t miss the west door, decorated in pure 15th-century style: it has been finely carved and is one of Dunmore Abbey’s treasures.
The visit is very soothing, thanks to its wild, rural setting. The building has a charm worthy of Ireland’s finest ruins. A must-see!
