Eagles Rock is remarkable not only for its beauty but also for its geological significance.
It is Ireland’s tallest rock column, rising majestically over 330 metres above the ground.
Worthy of a Mordor landscape, Eagles Rock has been shaped naturally over the millennia, sculpted by erosion and the force of nature.
It is essentially composed of limestone and schist, covered at its base by a thick carpet of soft green heather.
The only one of its kind in Ireland, the site is one of the country’s natural curiosities, attracting geology, hiking and photography enthusiasts every year.
For hiking enthusiasts, Eagles Rock is a destination of choice. Trails winding through lush green hills offer a challenging and rewarding hiking experience.
But be warned: you won’t be able to reach its summit. Eagles Rock has so far only been climbed by 6 people, in two ascents: one in 1971, the other in 2012. Unless you’re a champion climber, you’ll only be able to use the surrounding trails, allowing you to circle around the Eagles Rock column.
But don’t be disappointed: you’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery, including views of Slieve League in Co Donegal and the Arroo Plateau to the north.
The level of walking required remains reasonable, perfect for hardy hikers who aren’t afraid of taking on uneven terrain in places, with a bit of a gradient.
Bring a good backpack, water, food and protection from the cold and wind. It must be said that the site is quite exposed to the wind: so go out on a clear, dry day to avoid wading in the mud.

Be careful on certain stretches, where the road is sometimes rough with holes and bumps.
Once you’re near Eagles Rock, you’ll find free parking areas. From here, access to the site is on foot. The hiking trails to the summit are well-marked, but it’s important to wear suitable footwear and be prepared for hilly terrain.
