Fenit Lighthouse (also known as Little Samphire lighthouse) is a superb Irish lighthouse, located 10km from Tralee in County Kerry, in the small village of Fenit. Situated on a small island not far from the shores of the village, the lighthouse is located in a magnificent area, where the scenery is sumptuous! A must-see if you’re in the area!
Fenit Lighthouse was built in 1851 on Samphire Island, a small island a few hundred meters west of Fenit Pier. Slightly isolated, the lighthouse keeps a watchful eye on the village harbor, and attracts thousands of visitors every year to learn more about the lighthouse’s operation and history.
To visit it, you’ll need to take a shuttle bus across the 500 or so meters that separate you from the island, where you can admire an imposing bronze sculpture of Saint Brendan, an Irish saint originally from Fenit. Possibility of visiting the lighthouse and attending an exhibition revealing the building’s secrets. You’ll learn all about the life of a lighthouse keeper in those days (before the lighthouse was automated), and be able to admire the lighthouse lens while learning how it works.
In short, it’s a fun tour that will take you through some exceptional scenery of the surrounding Kerry mountains!
