Glantane East is an Irish megalithic complex located 6.4 km from Millstreet, County Cork. Rather impressive, it includes a dolmen, 2 stone circles and several alignments. A major site in the region, sure to fascinate archaeology enthusiasts!
Glantane East is located in the Keel River valley on the upper north-western slopes of Musherabeg mountain, in Glantane townland. Rather quiet and tranquil, the area offers a superb terrain for hiking and discovery!
You will then come across a vast archaeological complex consisting of :
The dolmen would have served as a tomb during the Neolithic period. Rather small, it doesn’t exceed 90cm in height, but its cover table measures 2.4 metres! It rests on several small megaliths that balance the whole.
Not far from here stands a first stone circle, 5 metres in diameter, made up of 5 standing stones and 6 fallen stones ranging in height from 50cm to 1 metre. In the center is a hole where an even more imposing megalith must once have stood.
A little further on, you’ll find a second, less imposing stone circle, as well as aligned stones. Their visit is free and well worth the detour!
