The Glencolmcille Folk Village is a life-size recreation of a rural Irish village from centuries gone by. It’s here that you can immerse yourself in the past of the Irish peasantry… On the program, a thatched-roof retro village, and a glimpse of daily life in those days, from farm work to household chores…
The folk village of Glencolmcille lies on the shores of Glen Bay in south-west Donegal, in the heart of the Gaeltacht region (a place where Gaelic traditions are still alive and well, and where Irish Gaelic is spoken).
The village is a kind of living museum, where you can witness the daily life of rural Ireland at the time. And let’s face it: the means have been put in place to gain in authenticity!
Each house is an exact replica of a dwelling used by the local population in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, as well as a school, a fisherman’s house and a pub-grocery.
Visitors can stroll through the village at their leisure, and even join a guided tour offered by the attraction’s managers. You’ll learn all about the way they cooked, the farming tools they used, the way they slept, their means of lighting and heating, their handicrafts, and their cultural traditions (including music and dance!).
A truly comprehensive tour that will take you back in time. For our part, we didn’t hold back our pleasure!
