Howth Castle is a castle in County Dublin. In remarkable condition, it lies not far from the village of Howth, and was once the property of the St Laurent family, who have reigned supreme over the town of Howth since 1180. Built in the 14th century, the castle boasts lovely views over Dublin Bay.
Howth Castle is said to have been built by English architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. Built in pure Anglo-Norman style, the château features an inner courtyard and square crenellated towers. Still in the hands of the St Laurent family, the owners refuse to open their château to visitors.
However, you can admire it from the outside, by taking a stroll in the château grounds (only access to the gardens is permitted). You’ll discover magnificent gardens, tastefully crafted, with hedges forming incredible patterns. Don’t miss the avenue of beech trees, or the fields of rhododendrons!
The National Museum of Transport is also located in the castle grounds. His exhibits include numerous trucks, streetcars, fire engines and tractors.
