A Window on Donegal's Wild Coast

Inishowen Head Lighthouse (also known as Shroove Lighthouse) is a superb Irish lighthouse in County Donegal. Situated right on the beach, it’s one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the whole of Ireland, although it remains little known to tourists. Its enchanting setting lets you enjoy the sea spray and typical Irish seascapes. This lighthouse is closed to visitors, but you can approach it from the beach!

History of Inishowen Head Lighthouse

A tireless guardian of the ocean

Shroove Lighthouse was built in the 19th century and is still in use today. It serves as a landmark and navigational aid for ships sailing near the Inishowen Peninsula, an area known for its sometimes difficult sea conditions.

The lighthouse’s location has always been strategic, as it lies close to several important shipping routes. Located at the end of the Inishowen Peninsula, it offers a wide view of the ships coming and going.

For decades, lighthouse keepers lived and worked here, ensuring the safety of the sailors and fishermen who used these waters. Their often precarious living conditions exposed them to constant danger.

Today, the lighthouse has been automated and has become a local tourist attraction.
