Kinneigh Round Tower is a medieval round tower about 5km northwest of the villages of Enniskean and Ballineen. Built on a rocky outcrop, the first 6 meters of the structure are hexagonal. The only building of its kind in Ireland!
The tower is believed to have been built around the 7th century by Saint Mocholmóg, who also built a monastery nearby.
The Kinneigh Round Tower is set on a rocky outcrop, and stands some 21.50 metres high. With its imposing door and 4 square windows, it overlooks the surrounding area of County Cork.
The first 6 meters are built on a hexagonal base, while the remainder rises to a conical structure, ending in a slate roof. This makes the building unique in Ireland, and has raised many questions in the scientific community. Its history is little-known, but researchers believe that the tower was once used by monks to store their relics and manuscripts.
The tower can be visited, but not from the inside, for obvious safety reasons. A beautiful tower, full of authentic charm!
