Merlin Woods is a forest on the outskirts of Galway city. A veritable paradise for the local flora and fauna, this forest boasts imposing Norway pines. A great forest for a stroll!
Merlin Woods Park is unique in that it has always been maintained by man. More than 164 hectares of trees were planted here in the 20th century, and the Irish state takes great care to ensure that the wood remains in good condition.
Very pleasant, the forest is open to walkers, and allows you to enjoy nature, while being 2 steps from Galway. By following marked trails, you can admire magnificent specimens of Norwegian pine, hazelnut, beech, sycamore and incredible oak trees.
In terms of wildlife, red squirrels often play in the trees, but you may also come across a few foxes, badgers and even deer. As for the birds, they’ll give you a real private concert!
Along the way, you’ll also come across Doughiska Castle, a 16th-century castle in the shape of a square tower, once owned by the Lynch family. The tower’s ruins and its location in the woods of Merlin Woods Park make it a truly charming place to visit!
