Monasterboice is a small abbey in County Louth. Built in 521 by Saint Buite, it was one of the greatest cultural and religious centers of the time. Very pleasant to visit, you’ll find a number of exceptional Celtic crosses, as well as a ruined round tower that was once the highest tower in Ireland.

Monasterboice (Mainistir Bhuithe in Irish Gaelic) is just 8km from Drogheda. During your visit, you’ll find a magnificent cemetery, with countless tombs, some dating back to the 6th century… The place is wonderfully restful: nature envelops the cemetery in a very pleasant atmosphere whatever the season!
Don’t miss the “Scripture Crosses”, the large Celtic crosses adorning the cemetery’s most illustrious tombs. Here you’ll find what is said to be Ireland’s highest Celtic cross: the “Muiredach Cross”. Measuring 5.8 metres high, it features sumptuous engravings of biblical scenes. The engravings are of remarkable finesse, and are present on all 4 sides of the cross.
A true masterpiece!
Near the cemetery and the Muiredach Cross, a few ruins still stand, testifying to the former presence of a large monastery. There’s also a magnificent round tower, which was burnt down in 1097. So don’t be surprised if the top of the tower is missing: it didn’t stand up to fire and the rigors of time.
At the time, this round tower was used to store the most precious manuscripts and religious relics. The monks also took the opportunity to keep an eye on the surrounding area. Unfortunately, no trace remains of the goods that were stored there.
