Less than 5km from Letterkenny is a 400-year-old wheat and flax mill. Considered the city’s oldest building, the Newmills Mill is a wonderful testimony to the industrial boom of yesteryear…
A visit to the Mill is free, and gives you access to one of the largest waterwheels in Ireland.
In the past, it was used to power the mechanisms required to crush wheat or flax in a stone millstone.
The whole mill has been magnificently preserved, and the tools present seem never to have moved. You’ll be able to discover the ancient methods of working wheat and flax, through the tools of the time, the means in place, and local craft techniques. An enriching introduction to 18th-century peasant life in Ireland!
A 17-minute video documentary on the history of Newmills Mill is also available. This one runs every hour or so, and presents a historical vision of the industrial boom in Ireland, using Newmills as an example… A very entertaining and interesting video!
