Rathfran Abbey is a ruined abbey not far from Killala in County Mayo. Built in 1274 by the Burgh or MacJordan family, it was burnt down in 1590 by Richard Bingham. Now in a state of disrepair, it offers a truly authentic sight!
Rathfran Abbey has preserved some of its architecture despite the fire that ravaged it in the 16th century. A pediment, old ogival windows and the nave, partially improved in the 15th century, can still be seen. Rectangular in shape, its structure is simple, with no Latin cross floor plan.
Nevertheless, the abbey was an important religious center at the time. The latter housed 2 separate cloisters to the north of the abbey: today, only their foundations remain, and are difficult to recognize. The living quarters have not survived the passage of time, but you can still enter the building. Roofless, Rathfran Abbey reveals its Gothic architecture, punctuated by flagstones on the floor.
Access to the abbey is free, and not very busy. Ideal if you want to get away from the tourist buses!
