The Royal Canal is located in Dublin’s docklands. Ideal for walkers, it is 140km long and links the River Liffey to the River Shannon (stopping at Cloondara). Inaugurated in the 19th century and recently restored, the canal is a popular place to take a stroll.
The Royal Canal is located in Dublin’s Docklands district. Although abandoned for many years, the canal is now at the heart of a major modernization program for the district.
The canal, now refurbished, rubs shoulders with the city’s most beautiful buildings. It crosses Dublin’s northern districts, passes close to the famous Croke Park sports stadium, and skirts high-standard homes and offices. During your stroll, you’ll no doubt come across the Spencer Dock Bridge: this ultra-modern-looking bridge is unmistakable with its round shapes and immaculate white color! It crosses the canal at a width of around 40 meters, and allows the Luas (Dublin’s tramway), as well as vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, to pass right across the canal.
A lovely walk, then, that will allow you to discover Dublin’s new image: beautiful and modern, yet attached to its natural surroundings and the Liffey.
