St Mary’s Church and cemetery date back to the 14th century. They would have been subsequently modified during the 15th century, with notable improvements such as the raising of the gables, the addition of a bell to the main tower, the construction of a porch and a south door… etc.
The site is free and easily accessible. The ruins are magnificent, overlooking the sea and Howth village harbour. The pediment, tower and most of the load-bearing walls are still intact today. Only the roof has not withstood the ravages of time.
As for the cemetery, it’s ultra-structured, and stands out from most small, anarchic Irish cemeteries where graves are scattered all over the place.
It’s a superb spot, well worth taking a few photos of, and discovering its history!
