Built in 1578, St Patrick’s Church is a Protestant church in the heart of the Newry countryside, surrounded by lush, flower-filled meadows. A little paradise for lovers of 16th-century architecture!
Commissioned by Nicolas Bagenal in 1578, Newry’s church is still in fine condition. Regularly restored and maintained, it is still in operation, and welcomes Protestants from the region every week.
Built on a Latin cross plan, it features a main bell tower, a nave and 2 transepts. The stained glass windows in the interior perfectly filter daylight, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and silence.
Don’t miss the small cemetery next to the church, with its many magnificent Celtic crosses… Some of the graves are very old, dating back to the origins of the church!
You can of course visit the interior of the church free of charge to admire the architecture.
