Visiter Sweny’s Pharmacy.

Sweny’s Pharmacy is a former 19th-century pharmacy, now converted into a bookshop and craft store. Located in Dublin, it was visited by the famous Irish writer James Joyce and is even mentioned in his world-famous novel, Ulysses! Today, it’s a must for any bibliophile visiting the Irish capital.

Visit Sweny’s Pharmacy in Dublin

The temple of lovers by James Joyce

Sweny’s Pharmacy is one of Dublin’s most confidential addresses, often overlooked by tourists. And yet, it’s one of the Irish capital’s jewels, so much so that the place is a historical and literary reference point!

Run exclusively by volunteers, Sweny’s is the only store in town to have kept its Victorian interior completely intact. The pharmacy ceased trading in 2009 and, in early November of that year, began to evolve into what it is today: a cultural center widely regarded as one of the most interesting places to visit in Dublin!

The visit is free and it’s the ideal place to take refuge on a rainy day in Dublin. Inside, he makes numerous references to James Joyce and his novel Ulysses.

He came out of the store, newspaper baton under his armpit, fresh soap wrapped in his left hand.

Ulysses, James Joyce

It’s well worth a visit, and will take you back in time to the Victorian era. The establishment capitalizes on this authenticity, selling handcrafted products with old-fashioned influences: lemon soap, James Joyce books and retro T-shirts… etc.

It’s worth noting that the site is literally taken over every year on June 16, the national Bloomsday (a day to celebrate the heritage of James Joyce and his novel Ulysses).

A visit to Sweny’s Pharmacy can easily be combined with a glimpse of Oscar Wilde’s birthplace (just 30 metres down the road), as well as a visit to the nearby National Gallery, which is also free to visit!

Or head to Sweny’s for a unique souvenir of your stay in Dublin!
