Visiter Tailor’s Hall.

A historic building, home to the tailors' guild of the time. The venue has also played host to the United Irishmens and the legendary Wolfe Tone.

Tailors Hall is a historic building in Dublin. Built in 1706, in the famous Liberties district, it was once the rallying point for Dublin’s tailors, who, one imagines, must have been the most elegant in the whole city! The place is known as the last of its kind in Dublin: it’s the last guild house in the capital… which makes it worthy of tourist interest!

History of Tailor’s Hall

A meeting place for tailors… but also for great figures in Irish history.

Tailors’ Hall in Dublin has served many functions over the years. Originally, as its name suggests, it was the headquarters of the Dublin Tailors’ Guild, a place where master tailors gathered to discuss the affairs of their trade. But his role didn’t stop there.

Beyond its use by tailors, Tailors’ Hall played a significant role in Dublin’s political and social history. It was a meeting point for political debate and discussion, particularly during the 18th century.

It hosted meetings of Irish patriotic groups, notably the United Irishmen, who were at the heart of the Irish revolutions of the late 18th century.

Among them, the great Wolfe Tone, an Irish revolutionary leader and one of the founders of the United Irishmen, attended Tailors’ Hall.

Indeed, it was a discreet enough place to discuss sensitive issues.

It was a gathering place for the leading figures of the Irish independence movement, and as such provided the setting for crucial discussions and planning in the struggle for Irish independence.

Over time, Tailor’s Hall came to be known as the“Back Lane Parliament“: proof of the strategic importance of this house in decision-making for the nationalist cause.

A house that was later transformed into a courthouse!

Later, Tailor’s Hall also served as a court of justice and was used for various other public and private functions over the years.

Today, this historic building is a popular venue for events, exhibitions and conferences, continuing to play an active role in Dublin’s cultural life.

However, it is not possible to visit the site: only the exterior can be admired from the street. Don’t hesitate to walk past it: its architecture is remarkable!
