Arranmore Island lighthouse, also known as Rinrawros Point, was built in 1859.
Since then, it has played an essential role in navigation along the north-west coast of Ireland.
At a time when the sea was the main means of communication, the lighthouse served as a valuable guide for sailors, helping them to avoid dangerous reefs and navigate safely.
At that time, guards lived on site to ensure the smooth running of the system. At the time, their working conditions were particularly difficult. Isolation, capricious weather, harsh ocean conditions, and constant danger!
Although the lighthouse is no longer in operation, it can still be visited… but only from the outside!
You can reach the island by ferry from the mainland, which is an experience in itself. Once there, you’ll need to walk or take a local cab to reach the lighthouse.
As soon as you arrive, you’ll be able to get up close and personal, admiring its dazzling whiteness and the outbuilding that once served as a house for the guards. The whole has a unique, timeless charm. There’s a certain magic and romance to it, typical of lighthouses in Ireland.
But the highlight of the show is the nearby landscape. The Arranmore lighthouse overlooks magnificent cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean. The panorama is splendid, vibrant and authentic. It’s enough to make you dizzy, and make you want to pull out your camera… or your smartphone!
Don’t hesitate to take a walk along the cliffs for even more enjoyment. Make sure you’re well-shod (hiking boots) and don’t go too close to the shore: there are no barriers, and a gust of wind can be particularly dangerous!
However, it’s a magical place where you can enjoy all the majesty of Ireland’s great outdoors. A unique, calm and peaceful place, which has the advantage of not being too well known by tourists!
