The Big Key(An Eochair Mhór in Irish Gaelic) is a stunning cliff on Tory Island, County Donegal, Ireland. It can be recognized by its remarkable key shape, with its jagged rock. A magnificent place, one of the island’s must-see highlights!
An Eochair Mhór (meaning the “Big Key”) is located on the east coast of Tory Island, one of the region’s most beautiful islands. The Falaise is a long, steep-sided rocky spur. It ends with a large rock called“An Tor Mór“.
The spur features prominent rock pinnacles known as the“soldiers of Balor“(Saighdiúirí Bhaloir). They give the spur a “jagged” appearance, helping to inspire the name “Big Key“.
The cliffs can be freely admired. We advise you to visit when the weather is clear. Be careful not to venture too close to the edge: no safety measures are in place there, and the precipice is never far away. What’s more, the area is quite windy, which can be dangerous.
In any case, the spectacle of these Irish cliffs is grandiose. They have been sculpted naturally by wind, ocean, salt and erosion. Thinner and thinner, it offers a skilful balance of solidity and fragility. A pure marvel of wilderness!
