The Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail

A portionable circuit, suitable for the whole family!

Located in the heart of the Irish countryside, the Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail, affectionately nicknamed the “Stairway to Heaven” by those who have had the pleasure of walking it, offers a unique hiking experience.

More specifically, the Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail is located in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and is part of the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark.

The route begins in an unspoilt wetland area, crossing ecologically important peat bogs before climbing to the summit of Cuilcagh Mountain.

The footbridge was designed to protect the fragile peat bog ecosystem from damage caused by hikers’ footsteps, while offering them the chance to enjoy panoramic views without disturbing the natural environment.

It winds its way through breathtaking scenery, and has become a must for nature lovers and photographers alike, as well as for those seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Well-marked and of reasonable difficulty (this is a family-friendly hike, with steps for those with steep gradients), the trail passes through Florence Court Forest, an idyllic park where the birds sing their hearts out.

This is also where you’ll find the impressive Marble Arch Caves, an 11.5km-long cave that ranks among the most imposing in Northern Ireland! Open to visitors, it’s the ideal place to discover the area in a different way, through its underground galleries and oversized stalactites…

If you continue walking, don’t miss the Cladagh Glen valley and the surrounding mountains. The views are magnificent, and you’ll enjoy authentic Northern Irish countryside, with its invigorating heathland and river air.

Don’t hesitate to take a picnic and enjoy the enchanting scenery!

Note that the most attentive may be able to observe a few otters on the river banks! In short, this is a walk for the whole family, but you’ll need to be well equipped! Hiking boots, backpack, water bottles, windbreaker and warm clothing are highly recommended for an unforgettable experience.

Before you go…

The popularity of the Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail has grown considerably, attracting visitors from all over Ireland and beyond. For the best experience, consider visiting the trail on weekdays or early in the morning on weekends to avoid the crowds.

Be sure to wear suitable hiking boots and be prepared for the changeable climate common to this part of Ireland. Although the trail is accessible to those in reasonable physical condition, the final climb can be demanding, so good preparation is essential.

Respect the environment

As you venture along the Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail, keep in mind the importance of leaving the landscape as you found it. Conservation of this unique habitat is a priority, and visitors are encouraged to follow the “leave no trace” principles by taking all their garbage with them and staying on the walkway to protect the surrounding bog.
