If you like trails in the Irish countryside, the Erris Head Loop Walk is a must. If you’re a keen hiker or simply a lover of beautiful views, don’t hesitate to follow this exceptional circuit: it will take you through Ireland’s great wild spaces and, more specifically, the beauty of its coastline!

Erris Head Loop Walk

A two-hour walking loop

Located in County Mayo, in the far north-west of Ireland, the Erris Head Loop Walk is a 5 km loop, ideal for hikers of all abilities. It takes you around Eriis Head, a small Irish peninsula famous for its breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, sheer cliffs and local wildlife.

The tour departs from the town of Belmullet in County Mayo and takes you along the Irish coast.

The Erris Head Loop Walk usually starts from the small parking lot at the end of the R313 road leading to Erris Head, towards Ceann Iorrais near Belmullet in County Mayo. This starting point is easily accessible by car and often serves as a base for hikers wishing to undertake this magnificent loop. Once parked, visitors can follow the signs and markings that guide them along the trail. It’s a pretty remote place, so make sure you have everything you might need with you before you start hiking.

The first few meters begin by overlooking a superb, secluded harbor, then take you to the edge of a talus, overlooking the ocean and cliffs. The view is incredible: you can see Illandavuck island, Pigeon Rock and the marine arches of the region.
You’ll then pass Ooghwee Cove, before starting the return leg of the loop, also rich in breathtaking coastal scenery.

Some sections of the trail can be tricky for children, but the whole loop is accessible to all… as long as you have basic equipment… and the weather remains kind.

Also, some areas can be muddy: hence the usefulness of hiking boots and a walking stick for those who want them.

Above all, take advantage of the two-hour walk to enjoy the view. Jagged cliffs, idyllic bays and panoramic views of the surrounding islands are a photographer’s delight.

Here’s an overview of the remarkable places you’ll come across on your way:

Erris Lighthouse: Although not directly on the route, if you have a little time, a trip to the lighthouse will give you a different perspective on the area.

The Cliffs: One of the highlights of the hike. Take time to admire the waves crashing against the rocks.

Secluded beaches: It’s not unusual to come across small coves or beaches, perfect for a picnic or a relaxing break.

You’ll also have the chance to spot seabirds such as cormorants, guillemots and puffins, especially during the nesting season.

How to prepare?

Anticipation for a successful walk!

Bring comfortable hiking boots, a waterproof jacket (Irish weather is fickle) and a backpack with water and snacks.

Although the hike can be completed in 2-3 hours, plan a full day if you want to take your time and enjoy the scenery to the full.

Although the path is clearly marked, having a map of the area can be useful.
