The Foynes Flying Boat Museum is a museum in the village of Foyne, dedicated entirely to aviation. Foyne played a leading role in aviation during the Second World War. This museum traces its history…
In the 30s and 40s, Foynes was considered Europe’s leading civil airport. Serving as a platform for seaplanes, it was a major air traffic hub during the Second World War.
The Foynes Museum looks back on this rich history, with a life-size replica of a Boeing 314 seaplane, an exhibition retracing the airport’s major events, and an anecdote explaining that it was at Foyne that Irish Coffee was invented!
Rumor has it that the first Irish Coffee was served to passengers distressed by the turbulence. The combination of whiskey and coffee seemed like a good idea to the hostesses! A great success, which has since become a typical Irish specialty!
The museum is rather large and well documented. You can enjoy all the American folklore of the era, admiring their boeïng 314, and their large American flag painted right on the cabin.
The exhibition is fun and lifts the veil on Ireland’s role throughout the Second World War. Fans of military and aviation history will be delighted!
