The Grand Opera House is a well-known theater in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where many internationally renowned performances are held. The theater was built in 1895 by one of the most inspired architects of the time: Frank Matcham. Since that day, the establishment has never ceased to give performances of all kinds: operas, theaters, shows… There’s something for every taste and sensibility!
Whether you like shows, or just architecture in general, the Grand Opera House is definitely worth a visit. Its outsized, magisterial exterior already sets the tone: you’re in the Temple of Show, Arts and Opera! It can accommodate up to 1,063 people: a great capacity!
Inside, the room is magnificent: gilding, carved ceiling and red velvet seats. Nothing is too good to enjoy a proper show! These include concerts, comedy one-man shows, musicals, plays and classical operas.
The building was damaged by bombs during the Northern Irish conflict. This happened between 1991 and 1993: a neighboring hotel was targeted (the Hotel Europa), but the opera house unfortunately bore the brunt of these explosions. The theater has been renovated, restored and continues to welcome spectators ever since.
