The Seanchaí is a museum in the town of Listowel, entirely dedicated to the greatest writers who grew up in County Kerry. Housed in a Georgian residence, it takes you deep into the lives of some of the greatest names in Irish literature. A visit that should delight word lovers!
John B. Keane, Bryan Mac-Mahon, George Fitzmaurice, Brendan Kennelly, Maurice Walsh… If you like these writers, you’re in for a treat! The Seanchaí (meaning “storyteller” in Irish Gaelic) invites you to follow in the footsteps of these great authors, and enjoy their writings. On the program: a look back at their lives, their works and their best extracts.
The museum is quite well designed, and at the same time offers another facet of the Kerry region, where writers depict the area in their own style and words. An ideal way to discover Kerry’s identity, its towns and villages, and its history through fictional characters as endearing as they are delightful.
In short, a very good museum, but not yet multilingual: the visit is entirely in English, and those allergic to the language of Shakespeare may quickly find the time long. Too bad…
It’s worth the detour if you’re fluent in both English and French, and it really makes sense!
