The Waiting On Shore monument is a landmark statue in the village of Rosses Point in County Sligo. Dedicated to the castaways of the sea, it is a vibrant testimony to the close bond between the Irish and the ocean and its difficulties.
The statue is located at Rosses Point, close to the RNLI, a sea rescue station.
Facing the bay, it takes the form of a woman holding her arms out to the sea in an almost dramatic pose, her hair and clothes blowing in the wind.
The show is both touching and poignant, demonstrating the extent to which the local population lives in symbiosis with the sea, aware of the dangers they face when their fishermen decide to take to the water. A work full of humility and respect for the ocean, immersing you in a typically Irish atmosphere… To be admired at sunrise or sunset, if possible, for even greater intensity!
Below, a commemorative plaque reads:
Lost at sea, lost at sea
Or in the evening tide
We loved you, we miss you
May God with you abide. (May God be with you)
