The Worm Hole (also known as “Serpent’s Lair”) is a natural formation much sought-after by extreme sportsmen and women! Located on the island of Inishmore (on the Aran Islands archipelago), the site is a strange spot, arranged in the shape of an almost perfect rectangular hole. Naturally formed, the place fascinates, and is the subject of extreme competitions!
There are many theories, tales and legends to explain the strange formation of Serpent’s Lair! It has to be said that the site’s regular geometric shape makes it look as if it has been carved by man! Made of limestone and granite, this “hole” is said to have been naturally dug by seawater, creating a sort of astonishing natural swimming pool! (Scientists, however, are at a loss to explain its “perfect” shape).
In fact, the setting is so beautiful that a sporting competition was organized here in 2014: the Red Bull Cliff Diving. The event consists in diving from a height of 27 meters, and performing an artistic figure. The dive lasts 3 seconds and propels divers at over 100km/h into the natural pool.
A highly dangerous sport for professionals only!
However, the site is accessible all year round: its coastline can sometimes be quite rough, so be careful and go in good weather. You can walk along the cliff and picnic there: it’s a wild place, with lovely views of the ocean!
In short: the perfect place for lovers of iodine, sea air and mysterious geological formations!
