If you’re a sporty type, excellent at climbing and mountaineering and in search of beautiful places, then Tormore Island is the place for you! Located on the Slievetooey side of County Donegal, Tormore Island is a huge rocky outcrop at the end of the coast. It overlooks the bay and the ocean, and offers a breathtaking spectacle! An exceptional panorama of Ireland’s wide open spaces and the sea, between rocky giants, beach and marine expanse.
Let’s make no mistake: Tormore Island is far from being accessible to all. Its steep passages, rolling rocks and peaks make it an extremely dangerous place.
Above all, it’s the place to be for mountaineers and professional climbers in search of adrenalin and thrills. So this is clearly a place to avoid if you’re with your family, and you’re not a professional climber. (Admittedly a little frustrating, but safety is also the key to a good trip!)
Tormore Island’s highest rock rises 150 metres above the sea. It’s enough to make you dizzy! In fact, it’s said to be so high up that it can even be clearly seen from the road leading from Dungloe to Kincaslough, more than 40km north of Tormore Island!
In terms of access, Tormore Island is pretty hard to get to. Although it can be approached by experienced mountaineers, you can only admire it from a distance. Don’t get too frustrated: this is a really dangerous place, and it would be foolish to take unnecessary risks. A magnificent spot nonetheless, highly confidential due to its location and the conditions required for access.
