L’USS Holland vers 1900. U.S. Navy / National Archives, 80-G-703837, domaine public.

A stop on the road to the Cliffs of Moher to discover the beginnings of submarine navigation.

On the road to the Cliffs of Moher, Mermaid House is home to a small museum devoted to an invention rarely associated with the Clare coast. The John P. Holland Centre tells how a man born in Liscannor designed the first submarine to enter service with the US Navy. It makes for a worthwhile stop in the heart of the village, just a few minutes’ walk from the harbour.

Visiting the John P. Holland Centre

From the first trials to the USS Holland

The exhibition traces Holland’s experiments. Behind the compact shape of his vessels lay two very practical questions: how could a boat be propelled once submerged, and how could it be kept at the desired depth? The Holland VI combined a petrol engine for surface travel with an electric motor for diving. Acquired by the US Navy in 1900, it entered service that same year as the USS Holland.

The museum offers an introduction to this technical history through a small village exhibition. To learn more, the profile of John P. Holland looks back at his youth in Clare, his departure for the United States and the role played by Irish nationalists in funding his first prototypes.

Extending your visit to the harbour or the cliffs

From Mermaid House, head down towards the harbour to take in the maritime landscape in which Holland grew up.
