If you too love unique experiences, far from the beaten track, that will make you spend an exceptional night in a prodigious setting, then we advise you to spend a night in an Irish lighthouse! And there’s no better place to experience this adventure than the lighthouse on Clare Island in Ireland’s County Mayo!
Living in a lighthouse isn’t for everyone… Far from it. If you’re more of an urban type, allergic to the wilderness, then you’d better move on. Although the Clare Island lighthouse has been specially designed for tourists, it’s ideal for nature lovers who aren’t afraid of isolation and the relentless surf of the ocean!
If you fall into the second category, Clare Island Lighthouse is the place to go for an unforgettable experience! Built in 1806, the Irish lighthouse has been a nautical landmark perched high on the steep cliffs for over two centuries, keeping watch over Achill Island, Westport and beyond.
Located on a small island off the south coast of Mayo, at the entrance to Clew Bay, the island is renowned for its spectacular cliffs, which are home to a large number of nesting seabirds! But it also boasts hills, peat bogs and forests that make it ideal for hiking.
In fact, it’s the largest of the islands off Mayo. It has a population of around 130!
Today, the architecturally majestic lighthouse has been lovingly transformed into fully-equipped luxury accommodation, offering the comforts of a modern guesthouse and an old-fashioned welcome – a haven of peace of a different kind.
Each of the six rooms is individually designed and decorated. Rooms are furnished with period fixtures and fittings, original artwork and comfortable old-fashioned cast-iron beds. Wood-burning stoves, open fires and underfloor heating add conviviality and comfort.
The former lighthouse keeper’s house has been specially converted to provide you with peaceful accommodation. There’s also a kitchen, living room, dining room and library.
As for the view, it’s breathtaking! You’ll be able to admire the vigour of the ocean while staying warm and cosy, with a steaming cup of tea in hand!
Please note that the lighthouse tower is open to all and is available, on request, for breakfasts at sunrise and drinks at sunset. What more could you ask for?
If you too have been seduced, then this is the place to book your next night in this Irish lighthouse: a unique experience awaits you!
