Years after the famous film Will Hunting, it seems that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have decided to shoot together again. And the project has already got movie fans salivating!
And with good reason: the two Hollywood friends (who have been friends for many years), are planning to take part in a film directed by the no less famous Ridley Scott. Entitled “The Last Duel”, the film will be shot in the magnificent lands of Ireland from 2020. The director is reportedly already on the lookout for stunning landscapes for his film: and it’s Ireland that has caught his eye!
The film will tell the story of an episode in French history during the 14th century. A man returns from the war against the British and learns that his wife has been raped by his best friend in his absence. Feeling betrayed, the soldier appeals to the King of France to demand a duel to the death, pitting him against his former friend.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will respectively play the 2 friends pushed to the brink of a duel. An interesting scenario, which should place the 2 actors in a different dynamic from their usual duo (where they were great friends in Will Hunting).
And who better to direct the film than Ridley Scott! He is responsible for such epic films as Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven.
As such, the film is likely to call for grandiose means. And then there’s the Irish countryside, so popular with Hollywood because it’s so wild and unspoilt! They give the impression that the story is set in the Middle Ages, even though it’s supposed to take place in France!
According to The Kilkenny People, Ridley Scott was spotted scouting out possible filming locations in County Kilkenny. In particular, Kells Priory, a magnificent site in the Irish region dating back to 1193! (Founded by Geoffrey FitzRobert, this Priory is the largest medieval ecclesiastical site in Europe and is of major historical value).
Ridley Scott has also reportedly identified Tintern Abbey in Wexford as another possible filming location.
The Kilkenny region is already very excited about the prospect of hosting such a shoot. A grandiose and masterful film in prospect, which could unveil all the beauty and historical vestiges of medieval Ireland.
In any case, we’ll have to be patient: although filming is scheduled for 2020, “The Last Duel” isn’t due to hit cinemas until January 2021.
