The measure had already been applied to France and other countries in Europe and Asia earlier in the week. Donald Trump has now extended this ban to Ireland and the United Kingdom. From now on, travelers in Ireland will no longer be allowed to enter the USA as long as COVID-19 remains a threat to America. Officially, this ban is expected to last for 30 days.
The USA isolates itself and adds Ireland to its blacklist
A measure aimed at countering the dangers of coronavirus contamination
Every country is currently making tough decisions. While Ireland has gone into “lock-out” to fight COVID-19, Donald Trump has just announced his stance on accepting potential travelers from Ireland. And he was very clear: from now on, America will ban entry to anyone traveling from Ireland.
This decision will take effect from midnight Monday, Washington time. It further isolates Ireland and the rest of Europe. The United Kingdom is no exception: the American president has also refused entry to travelers coming from there.
However, Donald Trump reassured Americans currently in Ireland:
Americans in the UK and Ireland can return home. The same applies to permanent residents in the United States currently in these two countries. They will, however, have to transit through designated airports, undergo screenings, and will then be asked to quarantine at home.
The suspension of entry for travelers from Ireland will last a minimum of 30 days but may change depending on how the epidemic evolves.
As a reminder, Ireland, already at a standstill, has decided to close schools, ban gatherings, and cancel St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The first economic impacts are already being felt: tourism is suffering, and local businesses are already affected.
