The Irish government has just imposed a third lockdown starting December 24, with some easing for the holiday season. This decision comes in response to the surge in Covid-19 cases observed in Ireland.
The Irish Government Tightens Restrictions
Irish Year-End Holidays to Take Place Under Lockdown
Thus, the government has returned to its highest alert level, which will remain in place until January 12. The purpose of this lockdown is the same as the previous two: to encourage Irish residents to stay home and avoid non-essential travel, while allowing exceptional flexibility in restrictions for the holidays. Schools will be allowed to reopen after the school break.
However, the government has also decided to postpone the January sales. This is a blow for local retailers, who nevertheless accept the decision, aware of the current health challenges.
“Unfortunately, last week we observed an extraordinary increase in the spread of the virus, similar to what has been seen in the UK and across Europe,” said the Irish Prime Minister. “While we do not yet have definitive proof that the new, more contagious strain is already in our country, the safest and most responsible approach is to act on the assumption that it is already here,” he added.
The Prime Minister also noted that the numbers indicate a daily growth of about 10% in cases.
Ireland is therefore playing the card of caution and anticipation. So far, the government’s measures have been among the strictest in Europe. But they have proven effective, allowing Ireland to manage the current health crisis as best as possible.
Note that the lockdown is set until January 12, when the situation will be reassessed. Depending on the circumstances, the lockdown may be extended or lifted.
