You may have seen him in the “Sherlock” series, where he played a memorable Moriarty, or in the touching “Fleabag” series. With a talent that shines on both stage and screen, Andrew Scott is undeniably one of the most versatile actors of his generation. So who really is this Irish actor with an impressive CV? Life and career of Andrew Scott

Early days: theater as a springboard

Andrew Scott was born on October 21, 1976 in Dublin, Ireland. He developed an early love of the arts, and of theater in particular. After training at the prestigious Drama School of Dublin, he quickly found opportunities to perform on stage. In 1994, he even won a Laurence Olivier Award, one of the highest honors in British theater.

Scott began his acting career at the age of 17, starring in the play The Importance of Being Earnest at Dublin’s Gate Theatre. He then made his television debut in the series The Last Furlong (2001).

In 2010, Scott was cast as Moriarty in the TV series Sherlock. Moriarty is a criminal mastermind and Sherlock Holmes’ main antagonist. Scott was acclaimed for his performance, which earned him a nomination at the British Academy Television Awards.

An eclectic film career

His talent is not confined to the small or big screen. Andrew Scott has always continued to act, winning several other Laurence Olivier awards. His performances in plays such as “Hamlet” and “Sea Wall” have received critical acclaim, confirming his status as a complete actor.

He then played in Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Hall. A great success for Irish cinema.

In 2016, Scott played Father Brendan Gleeson in the TV series Fleabag. Father Brendan is a Catholic priest who develops a romantic relationship with the series’ protagonist, Fleabag. Scott’s performance received critical acclaim, earning him a Primetime Emmy Award.

In 2017, Scott played the role of Colin Morgan in the film Pride. The film tells the story of a group of gay and lesbian activists who support striking Welsh coal miners in 1984. Scott was acclaimed for his performance, which earned him a nomination at the British Independent Film Awards.

In 2019, Scott played the role of Max Denbigh in the film Spectre. The film is the 24th in the James Bond series. Scott’s performance earned him a Saturn Award nomination.

A talented actor

Andrew Scott, though discreet, is part of the Irish and Hollywood film landscape. His highly accurate performances make him an actor who is often noticed, and regularly employed for supporting roles.
