The story takes place in Ireland in the 9th century. Brendan, a young monk of 12, lives in Kells Abbey, a fortified enclosure where the brothers live to the rhythm of repeated Viking assaults.
Brendan then meets Brother Aidan, a great master illuminator, who is responsible for protecting the Book of Kells, a fabulous unfinished manuscript. Brendan is then initiated into the art of calligraphy, learns the secrets of illumination, and takes the risk of leaving the abbey with the book, to better protect the Book of Kells.
On his journey, he discovers a strange, enchanted forest, terrifying mythological creatures, and defies the Vikings…
