Flogging Molly

Flogging Molly - Kasper Flörchinger - cc

They’re punks, and love Celtic-style rock. Flogging Molly is an American band from L.A. like few others, constantly revisiting Irish music with energetic guitars and traditional Irish instruments. Hailing from Los Angeles, the band has a real “pro-Irish” label (like the Dropkick Murphys) and a reputation that has crossed the borders of the United States to enjoy real success in Europe, and especially in Ireland!

Group foundation

Flogging Molly began with Dave King, a young Irishman who had spent his life in Ireland, and who decided to fly to the USA in the 80s. Dave King is particularly attracted to hard rock, and meets various bands with whom he plays until 1997, when he meets other musicians in a Los Angeles pub called “Molly Malone’s”.

Dave King soon got on well with them, and eventually suggested they form a new band together, agreeing to form “Flogging Molly”.

Flogging Molly, an Irish-style band…

Before long, Flogging Molly were playing a series of dates around Los Angeles, and began to fascinate audiences, who were particularly amazed by their energy, which totally electrified the stage. The band seems to love combining heavy guitars with Irish instruments, all punctuated by efficient drumming. The influence of the Pogues, the Irish band who pioneered the association between rock and Irish music, is also evident… With Flogging Molly, their music is a strange combination of the aggressiveness of punk with the themes and influences of Irish music.

In 2007, the band released their first album, “Alive Behind The Green Door”, an explosive live album that garnered excellent reviews. A studio album, Swagger, was released in 2000, followed by “Drunken Lullabies” in 2002, “Within A Mile Of Home” in 2004 and “Float” in 2008.

Since the band’s inception, Flogging Molly’s line-up has undergone a number of changes, with some departures, but also some new arrivals. Here are the musicians who have been part of the band since 1997:

  • Dave King: Vocals and acoustic guitar
  • Bridget Regan: Fiddle, Irish flute, Uilleann pipes
  • Dennis Casey: Electric guitar
  • Matt Hensley: Accordion
  • Nathen Maxwell: Bass
  • Bob Schmidt: Mandolin, banjo, and bouzouki
  • George Schwindt: Drums
  • PJ Smith : Accordion
