Did you know? The traditional holly wreath you hang on your door at Christmas has its origins in an Irish custom! Back then, the Irish didn’t have Christmas trees to decorate their homes. The latter used holly, famous for its abundant growth in Ireland. Find out more in this article!
Ireland hasn’t always been a prosperous country. Quite the contrary. So at Christmas time, local people used to decorate their homes with whatever they could find. That’s why they used holly, a plant common on the island, to brighten up their doors and houses.
They sometimes added ivy for added generosity, playing with shapes.
Back then, there was no Christmas tree, no garland of lights: we kept things simple. The decorations were plant-based, and the means at hand brought a touch of magic to the Christmas party.
In fact, according to Irish tradition, the more berries there were on the holly, the more generous and prosperous the New Year would be. It was a sign of happiness, joy and celebration.
Nowadays, the tradition is still alive, and has even spread to the rest of the world! That’s why many families hang a pretty holly wreath (natural or plastic) on their door. Considered as a protection, it ensures peace and happiness at home. Better than the classic mistletoe bouquet!
