In Ireland, an Irish pub wouldn’t be an Irish pub without its famous traditional music sessions! These are concerts held in pubs, where you can enjoy a pint in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, to the rhythm of Irish music played by talented musicians! An experience not to be missed!
In Ireland, the Irish pub is one of those almost sacred institutions where Irish people like to meet up for a drink, a sports match or a chat with friends. But the Pub is also the place to go for live music: most of the country’s establishments are used to hosting local bands…
Their aim is to perform traditional Irish songs and create a cosy, festive atmosphere!
These sessions are usually announced in advance by the venue: some pubs have even made them a regular feature (especially in big cities like Dublin and Galway), with concerts every evening from 7 or 8pm (some only at weekends).
It’s worth noting that few ads ever offer a session, but they do exist. Some groups also play in the afternoon: it’s up to the establishment.
Don’t hesitate to contact them before you go, to make sure a session will be offered on site.
A session usually lasts between one and two hours. The musicians settle down at the table, order drinks, and begin their songs. Meanwhile, the surrounding customers continue to go about their business, chatting, laughing or listening attentively to the musicians.
This is often the moment when the atmosphere heats up: already very convivial, the pub becomes even warmer! This can lead to customers (both Irish and foreign) singing, dancing and clapping their hands to the rhythm of the bodhràn, tin whistle and fiddle – traditional Irish instruments!
It’s usually at these times that the Irish pub is packed and the atmosphere is at its most authentic! It’s here that you’ll taste the famous “craic”, a Gaelic term meaning “moment of fun”. We’re immersed in the very heart of Irish culture, music and social references!
Above all, don’t hesitate to attend a session: they’re usually free, and will give you a great time, whether you’re familiar with Irish music… or not!
