P.S I Love You is an American film, directed by Richard LaGravenese and based on the novel written by Cecelia Ahern, daughter of former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. The critically acclaimed, romantic film stars Hillary Swank and Gerard Butler in a most sympathetic Irish setting! The program features romance, humor and 100% Irish landscapes!
PS I Love You
Holly Reilly and Gerry Kennedy are a married Irish couple living in New York. Very much in love, they punctuate their daily lives with passionate arguments and intense reconciliations, and are perpetually faced with money problems and other everyday worries…
All hell breaks loose when Gerry dies of a brain tumor, leaving behind a devastated Holly with no will to live.
Holly locks herself in her home for over a month in a state of grief that is most difficult to overcome… Until the young woman receives an audio recording from Gerry on her birthday, announcing that before his death he had written her a number of letters, which she will receive for over a year… Each of her letters contains instructions to be followed to the letter, with one aim in mind: to help Holly regain a taste for life…

Thanks to an excellent cast (Hilary Swank, Gerald Butler, Lisa Kudrow, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kathy Bates), the film P.S. I Love You makes the most of Cecelia Ahern’s book, portraying endearing characters who live in good humor and a fiercely offbeat sense of humor that lighten the film’s otherwise heavy tone.
With an already prestigious list of films to his credit (The Man Who Whispered in Horses’ Ears, Erin Borokovich…), Richard LaGravenese has created a most touching new film, dealing lightly and humbly with what could have been a most indigestible subject: love bereavement.
P.S. I love You
Hilary Swank portrays a touching character, overwhelmed by grief and depression, but whose downfall is constantly played down, and punctuated with humor by herself and those close to her… She’ll learn to live again as she reads her late husband’s letters, put an end to her doubts and regrets, and finally leave her past behind her, so that she can move on with her life…
In the course of her re-learning, she is led to try everything from karaoke to an initiatory trip to Ireland, where the couple once met… Along the way, Hilary Swank tries to reconnect with life, meets new people and finally emerges from her depression to live a free and happy life…
Gerard Butler’s performance as Holly’s husband, a most credible Irishman, is to be commended, as he keeps Ireland in the spotlight throughout the film. A good party-goer, jovial and full of humor, this Irishman turns out to be an excellent guitarist, a good drinker and a great romantic. Don’t miss his musical performances: the songs sung by Gerry Kennedy’s character are beautifully performed by the actor himself!
As for the Irish countryside, the film hasn’t skimped either, offering us sumptuous scenery in County Wicklow, including the Wicklow Mountains National Park… It’s a place where you can rub shoulders with the pure Irish, who like to go to the pub, play music, dance and sing along to lively tunes… But the film never lapses into caricature, and paints a particularly credible portrait of Ireland.
Finally, on the soundtrack side, the film spoils us with a 100% Irish playlist, featuring artists such as The Pogues and Flogging Molly.
In short, an excellent film that will appeal to a wide audience!
