He is a leading figure in traditional Irish music. Paddy Moloney (1938 – 2021) is undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous traditional Irish musicians! And with good reason: he was the figurehead of the Chieftains, a group that played traditional Irish music. An outstanding musician, Paddy Moloney’s talents include the tin whistle (a typical Irish flute) and the uilleann pipe, an Irish bagpipe. Life and career of Paddy Moloney

A passionate man who forever changed the face of Irish music

Paddy Moloney was born in Donnycarney, not far from Dublin. As a child, he developed a passion for Irish music. Lulled by the musicians of the time, he took up the tin whistle at age 6, and the uilleann pipe at age 8. A jack-of-all-trades, he also discovered the diatonic accordion and the bodhrán.

As a teenager, Paddy Moloney is a talented musician who amazes those around him. He then plays around, in local Irish pubs, or at local events. His interpretations already heralded the beginnings of a remarkable career.

In the late 1950s, he met Seán Ó Riada, a Cork musician with whom he exchanged ideas on traditional Irish music.

He joined the Ceoltóirí Chualann group a few years later.

In 1959, he created the Claddagh Records label. He became producer in 1968, overseeing the recording of forty-five albums.

Chieftains’ training and success

Paddy Moloney founded The Chieftains in 1962, a band that quickly became a major force on the international scene.

Paddy Moloney composes for the band, drawing his inspiration from Ireland’s rich culture and musical traditions. His work has helped to put Irish music on the international map, promoting the musical heritage of his homeland. Thanks to his compositions and performances, Paddy Moloney has become an undisputed ambassador of Irish music.
