Pádraic Delaney is an Irish actor born on November 6, 1977 in Wexford, Republic of Ireland. An artist of international stature, he has taken part in numerous projects in Ireland, as well as for Hollywood. A dedicated and hard-working individual, he is best known for his roles in films and TV series such as The Wind That Shakes the Barley, The Tudors, Blackthorn and Knightfall.

Life and career of Pádraic Delaney

Youth and training

Pádraic Delaney was born into a family of five children. He grew up in Wexford, a town in the south-east of Ireland. Later, he left home for Dublin, where he discovered a keen interest in theater and literature. He went on to study at Dublin’s prestigious Trinity College, graduating in 2001 with a degree in Dramatic Arts.

From then on, Pádraic Delaney had only one dream: to land roles in films and series.

Career beginnings

Just 2 years later, Pádraic Delaney made his film debut in An Cuainín. He went on to star in several Irish TV series, including Pure Mule and The Clinic.

But all this accelerated in 2006, when Pádraic Delaney landed the role of Teddy O’Donovan in the film The Wind That Shakes the Barley, directed by the famous Ken Loach. For the Irish actor, it’s success. Playing opposite Cillian Murphy, he demonstrates a real talent for interpretation in a heart-rending and deeply engaging historical film.

For Pádraic, it’s an opportunity to revisit a difficult episode in Irish history: the Civil War.

The film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and gave Delaney international recognition.

Hollywood career

After The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Delaney took on a series of Hollywood roles. He played Anne Boleyn’s brother in the TV series The Tudors (2008-2009), where he co-starred with another Irish actor: Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as Henry VIII.

He then went on to star in the film Blackthorn (2011) and the medieval TV series Knightfall (2017-2019).

Every time he appears, his performance is widely noticed. Fair, without ever overdoing it, he offers subtle interpretations of great finesse. As a chameleon, he rose to become one of the greatest Irish actors of his generation, and showed a genuine interest in historical shows.

In Ireland, it’s one of the most popular names. For the Irish, he’s one of the actors whose success has revitalized the Emerald Isle’s artistic reputation.

A musician by trade

But acting isn’t the only area in which Delaney excels. He is also an accomplished singer and musician. He released an album, entitled “The Sea”, in 2011.
