The RUC has its origins in the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary), a police force created in 1822 to maintain order throughout the island of Ireland. When the latter was dissolved in 1921, the RUC was created to ensure that the partitioning of the island into 2 parts would not be a source of further conflict.

Like the RIC, the RUC is primarily made up of British Protestant and Unionist police officers. From its creation until 2001, the RUC experienced violent clashes with the IRA. In particular, it lost many men during the Troubles, when attacks multiplied throughout Northern Ireland.

In 2001, as the situation tended to become more peaceful, the RUC was transformed into the PSNI (Police Service of Northem Ireland). Since then, their actions have been more moderate, in an attempt to participate in the ongoing peace process.
