The Dark Hedges site, famous for having been a major location for the filming of the “Iron Throne” series, has just been closed by the Northern Irish authorities, following acts of vandalism.
In fact, many of the tourist signs announcing the proximity of the site have been spray-painted. The famous avenue of trees was spared.
However, the tags were taken very seriously by the PSNI (Northern Ireland Police), who launched an investigation and preferred to protect the site from any malicious acts by closing access to Dark Hedges to visitors. Any witnesses to the damage have been invited to come forward.
As a reminder, this location has become “The place to be” for fans of the series: the alley has seen a veritable explosion in terms of tourist visits. The imposing, tortured trees that make up the driveway were planted over 200 years ago by the Stuart family, to signify the entrance to their Gracehill House home.
A majestic entrance, which became a hit with the release of the hit series “Game of Thrones”.
Initially, the driveway was planted with more than 150 trees, but time and harsh weather took their toll on more than a third of them. Although depopulated, the alley has lost none of its splendor.
All the more reason for Northern Ireland to protect the site with ever greater care.
