There is one final journey to make to West Cork. Farewell to Deverill, the sixth and final volume of Daughters of Ireland, is due to be published by Verso on Friday 4 December 2026. Six months after The Deverill Oath, Santa Montefiore turns back the clock and returns to Ballinakelly, the fictional village where she brought Kitty Deverill and Bridie Doyle to life. This time, it all begins in 1865, long before either of them was born.
In Farewell to Deverill: two women and sixty years of secrets
In 1865, Eliza Fairfield catches Lance Deverill’s eye
Eliza Fairfield’s sisters dream of marrying one of the Deverill brothers and one day holding the keys to the castle. Eliza, however, prefers the edge of the woods, where she believes she glimpses creatures unseen by others. It is this young woman, so indifferent to marriage plans, who catches Lance Deverill’s eye. By shifting the period and following a neighbouring family, Santa Montefiore offers another perspective on the castle around which her saga has been built.
In 1925, a London scandal leads Gabriella to Ballinakelly
Sixty years later, Lady Gabriella leaves London following an affair that has set tongues wagging. Sent to stay with her great-aunts, the Fairfields, she expects an uneventful visit. The house proves stranger than she had imagined, and Charlton, the handyman, seems to know more than he lets on. The year 1925 will be familiar to readers of the series. It is also the year in which The Deverill Heiresses begins, the volume in which Celia attempts to rebuild the castle after the fire. The sixth novel returns to post-war Ireland, opening the door to another house.
