Produced by the famous Cooley distillery, Connemara whiskey is one of Ireland’s finest whiskies. This is a single malt, known as the first Irish peat whiskey. Connemara can be quite unsettling to taste: it’s much closer to a Scotch whisky than an Irish one. A great Irish classic: a true expression of the wild beauty of the Connemara region!

Did you know? Whisky Connemara is a UFO in Irish whisky circles. This is one of the few whiskeys“made in Ireland” to use peat in its distillation process.
To achieve this, it uses over 75% malted and peated barley. The distillery then calls on its unique know-how and traditional Irish techniques to produce the beverage.
And the result is astonishing: this whisky like no other combines the roundness and smoothness of Irish whiskey… with the typical smokiness of an Islay-type Scotch malt!
A kind of meeting of the sexes… Very surprising, and a real eye-opener!
On the palate, Connemara whiskey infuses notes of licorice, smoke and peat. The whole is nevertheless floral and slightly fruity. The whole is enveloping, powerful and gentle all at once. A beverage full of character and balance, demonstrating Irish expertise in peated whiskey.
One thing’s for sure: the Scots have a lot to live up to! The Irish still have it in them to rival their best productions!
Produced at Cooley Distillery (Co. de Louth), the whiskey is distilled on site, then stored in maturing cellars at Kilbeggan Distillery (Co. Westmeath). It is stored there for 12 years before being marketed. It takes time and patience!
In Ireland, this whiskey is quite popular. It’s perceived as a classic Irish whisky on the Emerald Isle. It uses such high-quality ingredients that many consider it to be Ireland’s flagship beverage of character. Its taste and character alone are evocative of the Connemara region, its wild beauty and Irish cultural identity. In fact, many tourists want to enjoy a glass of this whiskey… right in the heart of the Connemara region! (There are simple pleasures in life!)
This whiskey is available almost everywhere, in Irish pubs, restaurants and supermarkets… Suffice to say, it’s not hard to find in Ireland! It can also be found at the distillery in Kilbeggan: an opportunity to take a tour of the premises and learn more about the processes involved in making such a beverage!
Finally, it can be served in a variety of ways: dry, with ice, or in a cocktail (such as an Irish coffee). It’s all a question of taste and choice.
A word of advice: we don’t recommend bringing a bottle of wine with you from Ireland (unless you really want to). This whiskey is exported all over the world, and the price in Ireland is often higher than elsewhere because of taxes. Don’t break the bank for nothing: the same alcohol is available near you! Admittedly, with a little less charm, but we promise: it’s the same whiskey! I promise!
Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health. Drink in moderation.
