Beamish is a typical Irish dark beer, served in most Irish pubs. Brewed in Cork by Beamish and Crawford, this beer is only slightly less successful than Guinness, and is consumed every day by thousands of connoisseurs around the world…
A Beamish – Graham Nagle – cc
It all began in 1792, when Richard Henrick Beamish and Arthur Frederick Sharman Crawford decided to join forces to create a brewery. Their aim: to brew stout-style brown ales, to compete with the rising Guinness, which has been brewing exceptional beers since 1759.
They then began mass-producing their first Beamish, a dark beer with a creamy head and particularly assertive aromas. Success soon followed, and the brand was soon forced to expand and produce more to meet demand.
Despite their success, Beamish never managed to overtake its competitor, and remained a renowned beer, ranking in the top 5 of the greatest Irish beers… Today, Beamish is as successful as ever, and is one of the best-known Irish beers. It was acquired by the Scottish & Newcastle group and is distributed in Ireland and other countries such as France.
Beamish is a beer that has much in common with the likes of Guinness and Murphy. Served on draught, it has a very dark color, turning deep black, enhanced by a thick yet light layer of cream.
Its aromas are mainly caramelized, and the bitterness of Beamish is really pleasant in the mouth for 4.2% alcohol.
Widely marketed, it is available both on draught and in cans. A floating widget system (a plastic ball that aerates the beer in the can) ensures that the quality of the beer served is equivalent to that of a traditional draught beer. Another special feature of this beer is that there are a number of Beamish variants in Ireland, including the excellent Beamish Red, a red ale that is much sweeter and less strong-tasting than its predecessor.
It is served exclusively in Ireland, but there are a few pubs in Europe that serve this beer. It is designed for those seeking fruitier, less bitter flavors…
