Dublin: Bewley’s, Historic Cafe Closes Its Doors

Le Bewley’s Grafton Street

The famous historic cafe in Dublin, Bewley’s Oriental Cafe, is forced to close its doors. This iconic institution, founded in 1927, has unfortunately been hit hard by the economic effects of Covid-19 and lockdowns.

Bewley’s Oriental Cafe Brought to Its Knees by Irish Lockdown

The establishment can’t cover its monthly rent without reopening

Its owner, Paddy Campbell, has done the math. The cafe cannot withstand the prolonged lockdown while still having to cover its usual expenses. Rent and other costs mean the business can no longer keep afloat.

In a message to staff, Paddy Campbell explained that the annual rent for the venue exceeds 1.5 million euros, and his request for a temporary rent reduction was denied.

This decision effectively seals the fate of the cafe, renowned for its unique atmosphere, impeccable service, and authentic Art Deco setting.

As a result, the upcoming closure will lead to the layoff of 110 employees.

A symbol of Dublin is thus fading away, a blow that has deeply affected the spirits of Dubliners and the rest of Ireland.

For context, Bewley’s Cafe was established in 1927. The venue has weathered tough times before, closing in 2004, reopening in 2005, and closing again in 2016.

The owner had even recently invested in a major renovation, with a staggering budget of 12 million euros.
