Achill Yawl Festival

In Achill Sound, you sometimes have to wait for the tide to give the signal to start. On the water, crews prepare to race in wooden boats whose earliest versions were not built as racing yachts. They were used for everyday work along the Mayo coast. It is this history that takes to the water again at the Achill Yawl Festival, a series of regattas held over several weekends around the island.

Achill Yawl Festival: Mayo’s traditional regattas

From working boat to racing yacht

The Achill yawl is recognisable by its wooden hull and single mast. Here, the term refers to a local type of boat, regardless of the two-masted rig that the same word can describe elsewhere. Researchers Chuck Meide and Kathryn Sikes trace its evolution in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology: they place its origins in boats from Norwegian merchant ships, whose designs evolved along Achill’s shores in the 19th century. By the middle of the 20th century, the boats had been adapted for racing.

The regattas helped revive the construction of these boats. Achill Tourism notably reports the opening of a workshop in Mulranny in the early 2000s. The festival’s Irish name, Cruinniú Bádóirí Acla, also recalls the place of the language in this gathering of sailors.

When can you see Achill’s yawls?

A schedule of races rather than a single weekend

The regattas take place in summer around Achill Island and Clew Bay. The 2026 schedule included events at Achill Sound, Currane Pier and Derreens, between August and September. For 2027, the dates and locations remain to be confirmed: the 2026 stages are reference points, not repeat events. The Achill Tourism calendar also links to the organisers’ announcements.

Watching a regatta from the shore

Choose your viewpoint after checking the start

First, check where the boats start and finish: some races link two locations. Timings may change with the tide and the weather. So check the latest announcements on the day itself, especially if you are travelling for a single regatta. Stay in areas accessible to spectators and leave the slipways clear for the crews. A pair of binoculars helps you follow the manoeuvres when the boats move away from the shore.
