In Derry, Christmas gifts can also be chosen beneath the stained-glass windows of an iconic building. The Guildhall Craft Fair brings makers together at the Guildhall, in the heart of the city. This craft fair focuses on workshop production: the items on offer must be handmade in Ireland. It is a wonderful opportunity to take home an original piece and discover the building that hosts the fair.

Discovering the Guildhall Craft Fair

An event dedicated to Irish craft

The Guildhall Craft Fair is part of Derry’s end-of-year events. Its appeal lies in its selection of makers from across the island: for the 2026 edition, the organisers announced that around 43 exhibitors had been selected, based in particular on the quality of their workmanship, the originality of their designs and the inventiveness of their creations.

The rules restrict the fair to original creations made in Ireland and exclude products imported or bought for resale. For visitors, this requirement gives the discovery a clear focus: look at the materials, compare the finishes and take an interest in the person behind each object.

What gifts can you look for on the stalls?

The crafts represented may include ceramics, jewellery, textiles, leather, wood, glass and prints. The exact selection depends on the year. A mug, a piece of jewellery or a small graphic artwork can make an easy-to-carry souvenir, while larger pieces require some thought about transport.

Take the time to talk to the exhibitors: techniques, care, materials and the possibility of placing an order are all useful points to discuss before buying. If you are travelling with hand luggage only, check the dimensions and fragility of your find before making your decision.

A place for food producers

A craft food area is also planned in the Whittaker Suite. It complements the discovery of the arts and crafts and offers the possibility of choosing edible gifts. The producers present and their specialities vary from one edition to the next, so it is better to check the exhibitor list rather than count on finding a particular product.

The Guildhall, a setting well worth visiting

A building linked to Derry’s history

Opened in 1890, the Guildhall was built to house the municipal administration. Its name recalls the city’s historic links with the London guilds. Its neo-Gothic silhouette and clock tower make it an instantly recognisable landmark.

The building survived a fire in 1908 and the attacks of 1972, before undergoing several restorations. A major programme of works was completed in 2013. Inside, its stained-glass windows tell part of the local story and bear witness to its links with the guilds of London.

The fair therefore also offers an opportunity to discover this heritage site. Depending on the event layout, some rooms may be occupied or subject to particular circulation arrangements: the conditions for a regular visit to the building do not necessarily apply during the market.

Planning your visit to the fair

An event held over a single weekend

The Guildhall Craft Fair is a short-duration event. When organising your stay, make sure to check the dates for the edition concerned: this is not a market that runs throughout December. The official Visit Derry listing provides the information announced for 2026.

Allow around an hour to browse the stalls, or longer if you enjoy talking to the makers. This is only a suggested visit duration: it depends on your pace and how busy the fair is.

Getting to the Guildhall

The Guildhall is on Guildhall Square, close to the shopping centre and the River Foyle. The bus station is around a five-minute walk away, according to the municipal information. The Quayside and Foyleside car parks are among the options to consider if you are arriving by car; their access conditions and charges should be checked separately.

To plan a journey by public transport, check the routes provided by Translink. If you have particular accessibility needs, contact the Guildhall before your visit to find out which routes will be open during the fair and how movement between the stalls will be managed.

Extending your day in Derry

Combining craft and a city walk

The market’s central location makes it easy to continue exploring on foot. Depending on the weather and the time available, you can walk to the city walls, stroll towards the Peace Bridge or explore the city-centre streets before taking a break in a café.

To make the most of the November light, if possible plan your outdoor walk during the day, then keep the fair for another part of your itinerary. This flexible programme allows you to combine Christmas shopping with a first introduction to Derry, without making multiple journeys.
