Don’t be afraid of this strange dish… It’s far more tasty than presentable! In Ireland, Garlic Cheese Chips are an institution! It’s a typical junk food dish, which Irish people like to order in fast-food establishments after midnight. A comforting dish of French fries (or potato chips) drowned in a garlic sauce and topped with melted cheddar cheese! (Yes, we know, just by reading the ingredients, we’ve all already put on 10 kilos).
Admittedly, Garlic Cheese Chips is a fatty dish that is mainly available in fast food chains and small street snack bars in Ireland. But let’s face it: it’s pretty damn good! And above all, damn economical!
In general, Garlic Cheese Chips are potato-based. And that’s where the variations come in. These are usually French fries, but can also be potato chips or even hash browns.
All topped with a smooth, creamy garlic sauce… Then topped with cheese au gratin! (Usually Irish red cheddar: one of the country’s great classics!). Note that there are also versions with grated Emmental cheese, but these are rarer.
The whole thing is ultra-economical, as it’s served for less than 3 or 4 euros, depending on the establishment. Irish people like to eat their food on the go, in the street.
The taste is spicy: the garlic is ultra-present, but balances perfectly with the potatoes and cheese. Nevertheless, it’s simple, delicious and has the added benefit of calming the stomach!
Give it a try if you’re looking for a taste of everyday Irish pleasures!
