Don’t let their looks or misleading name fool you: Irish Potato Candy is not a potato dish at all. It’s more like a coconut cream cake: delicious, especially when rolled in cinnamon!

Irish potato candy

Mini-cakes with controversial origins…

Of course, the Irish love this pastry, and the word “Irish” is even used in its name! However, the origins of this delicacy lie not in Ireland, but in the United States, near Philadelphia. It is said to have been created by Irish immigrants to be served especially on Saint Patrick’s Day.

It takes its name from its resemblance to potatoes.

Since then, Irish Potato Candy has been served not only in the United States, but all over Ireland!

You’ll find them in most local patisseries and supermarkets… But let’s face it: it’s in Irish homes, when they’re homemade, that they’re at their best!
